Sedimentary rocks exhibit small‐scale (mm) permeability variations which can be detected with a probe permeameter. The structure of the laminations may provide evidence about the characteristics of the measurement device. The statistical interpretation of these measurements using averages and variograms is enhanced when the geological character of the rock is taken into consideration. The three aspects of rock characterization, namely geology, measurement, and statistical analysis, are best assessed in concert. This theme is illustrated using probe data taken from sections of the Rannoch and Etive Formations, Northern North Sea.
