Programmes for the study of global change correctly identify the development of integrated numerical models of earth dynamics as an ultimate goal. But ongoing research and plans for future investigations suffer from a major flaw: they fail to treat life as a global phenomenon. We propose a long‐term strategy for the incorporation of the biosphere as a module into general circulation models (Gas).
