Simple digital filtering methods allow the correlation of patterns of metre‐scale cycles between outcrop sections and well logs through the Hettangian to earliest Sinemurian part of the Lower Lias in southern England. The matching of cyclic patterns is sufficiently confident to allow the identification of a significant break in the Blue Lias section at Lyme Regis (Dorset). The standard ammonite zones of the Hettangian Stage are shown to be of quantifiably unequal duration.
