. An illustrated generic key is given to the larvae of the eleven British genera of the Chrysomelinae. Diagnostic larval descriptions are included for each genus. The existing classification of these genera using characters of the adults and immature stages is reviewed. The inter‐relationships between the different suprageneric groupings in the Chrysomelinae are investigated in terms of the plesiomorphic and apomorphic states of eleven larval characters. A cladogram incorporating these characters and illustrating the proposed phylogeny is given. A classification based on larval characters would be similar to the existing classification, requiring no significant nomenclatural changes for its adoption.
