Descriptions are given of a new species of Trichomyia Group A of uncertain affinities from northern Queensland, and twenty‐nine new species of Group B, almost equally divided between New Guinea and eastern Australia north of lat. 34° S. The general biology, structure, genealogical relationships and distribution of Group B are discussed. Previously known species are redescribed as necessary, three new subgenera are erected within Group B, and synoptic keys are provided for the Trichomyia fauna of this entire area, which, with forty out of eighty‐one known recent species, is now the world's largest.
