The previously unknown male of the Fiji Island black‐fly is described, and previous descriptions of the female and early stages are amplified. The taxonomic status is re‐assessed in the light of more information than was available to Dumbleton (1973), and it is considered that the Fiji Island black‐fly should be treated as a subspecies (namely Simulium jolyi laciniatum Edwards) and not as a valid species.
