Femoral combs—a secondary sexual character in British Oscinellinae (Diptera: Chloropidae)

A specialised but variable group of setae on the middle femur of males of Chloropidae is described and its taxonomic importance discussed. This femoral comb has been found in 15 out of 24 genera of Oscinellinae, but was not found in 15 genera of Chloropinae.
