Pseudomorphs after skeletal halite occur in a bed of Lower Jurassic lacustrine shale at Holyoke, Massachusetts. The pseudomorphs include pagoda types similar to those described by Southgate and show dissolution furrows. However the shales were deposited in a permanently subaqueous rather than an emergent environment, and the pseudomorphs accordingly grew in brine‐saturated sediment. Evaporation to dryness is not therefore essential to the genesis of skeletal halite.
