SUMMARY The revision of terms under criterion 3 as proposed by CROOK (1965) is timely and should be accepted. Useful new terms are proposed to describe the three‐dimensional shape of cross‐strata, but there is as yet insufficient evidence for using cross‐stratal shape as a criterion for classification in a scheme in which morphological characters are selected for their known genetical significance. The proposed revision of criterion 5 is difficult to accept because it is not in accord with known cross‐stratification genesis.
