Incuhation of human monocylcs, derived from peripheral blood, with cell‐free supernalants from mixed lymphocyle cultures resulted in mcirpholngical and funelional changes in the mature macropliages. Activation of monocyle‐derived macrophages by these faciors resulted in a significant increase in their capacity to lyse anti‐D‐trealed human erythrticytcs. The tytic activity of both normal and activated macrophages appeared to be independent of eryihrophagocytosis. T lymphocytes activated by either allogeneic cells or ihe mitogen phytohaemagglutinin were not cytolytic lo treated eryihrocytes even at high effector to target cell ratios.
