371 patients with histologically confirmed adenocarcinomas of the digestive system were postoperatively monitored by analysis of the time course of the CEA concentration in the serum. The tendencies of the time courses of the computerized CEA surveillance diagrams allowed an early prognosis of local tumor recurrence or of generalized metastasizing. The diagnosis of a relapse on the basis of a rise in CEA concentration preceded a positive clinical diagnosis up to 10 months. The diagnosis was confirmed by second‐look operation or by other diagnostic means. The analysis of the CEA time courses made it possible to differentiate local tumor recurrence and generalized metastasizing.
