Effect of Antigenic Stimulation on the Enzymatic Activity of Mouse Peritoneal and Spleen Cells

Changes in cathepsin and acid phosphatase activities in peritoneal exudate (PE) cells of mice after antigenic stimulation were investigated. The increase of enzymatic activity in PE cells was dose dependent, with a maximum activity for phosphatase at 2‐3 days after injection and for cathepsin 3–5 days after injection. Particulate antigens, sheep red blood cells, and E. coli bacteria increased the phosphatase and cathepsin activities of PE cells to a greater extent than soluble antigens. There were only slight changes in the enzymatic activity of spleen cells after antigenic stimulation, and these changes did not correlate with those in the PE cells. The results are discussed in relation to the processing of antigen in the immune response.
