Pseudomonas solanacearum , the cause of bacterial wilt was isolated from stems, roots and developing cotyledons of peanut and the stem of a single aibika plant growing in a subsistence garden in Port Moresby. The garden had been cleared and planted to peanut after a fallow of at least 2 years. The bacterium could not be isolated from roots or rhizosphere soil of locally growing grasses and weeds, nor could seed transmission be demonstrated in peanut.
