Late‐season strawberries have suffered severe fruit distortion in several areas of the UK leading to downgrading of the fruit and financial loss to growers. In trials in 1984 and 1986 in Kent and Cheshire, frequent sprays of pyrethroid insecticides significantly reduced the percentage of distorted fruits. The distortion was attributed to the feeding of various species of thrips, including Thrips atratus, T. major and Frankliniella intonsa.
