SUMMARY Formaldehyde gas concentrations were measured following the mixing of potassium permanganate and formalin within a 1 ‐m 3 chamber. Similar concentrations of gas were measured irrespective of the order of mixing of the reactants at the lower ratios used (1 KMnO 4 :4–8 formalin), but at the higher ratio (1:2–4) more gas was produced when the KMnO 4 was added to the formalin than when the reverse sequence was followed. Spores of Botrytis cinerea were all killed at the dosages tested (0.18–0.30 mg formaldehyde per litre).
