SUMMARY In 1976/77, effective control of white rot ( Sclerotium cepivorum Berk.) in autumn‐sown salad onions on field plots was obtained by seed treatment with thiophanate‐methyl at 250 g/kg followed by either three stem‐base applications of the same fungicide at 0.3 g/m row/application (equivalent to 34 kg/ha) or by four stem‐base applications at 0.15 g/m row/application (equivalent to 26 kg/ha). Seed treatment alone with thiophanate‐methyl at 125 or 250 g/kg controlled the disease in the autumn but was ineffective by harvest in June the following year.
