SUMMARY Pod rotting caused by Botrytis cinerea Pers. ex Pers. occurred in breeding material of spring‐sown field beans ( Vicia faba L.) at Cambridge in July and August 1979. Tick beans ( V. faba var. minor ) were less susceptible to infection than types with longer, ffeshier pods. The incidence of aggressive lesions was less under irrigated than un‐irrigated conditions. Most lesions originated at the end of the pod distal to the stem, possibly as a result of earlier infection of fioral parts.
