SUMMARY Two types of physiological resistance to loose smut (Ustilago nuda (Jens.) Rostr.) occur in commercial cultivars of spring barley. Five cultivars, Francette, Mirena, Ramona, Tintern and Uta. rarely produced smutted ears although a severe incidence of embryo infection was obtained on inoculation. Cv. Excelle similarly produced few smutted ears but, by contrast, only a few embryos were infected in each of three years.
