SUMMARY A series of trials in 1972–74 in the strawberry‐growing area of Cheddar in SW. England showed that introductions of the predaceous mite Phytoseiulus persimilis in March at a rate of 5–10 adults/plant gave a good control of Tetranychus urticae on protected strawberries where average populations of 0·8–15 ex‐diapause female mites per lower leaf were present at the time of introduction. The cost of the technique was not economically acceptable at the price currently charged by commercial producers of the predator for use on glasshouse crops.
