SUMMARY A yellow‐brown necrosis of the innermost scale leaves of hyacinth bulbs was shown to be caused by Erwinia rhapontici (Millard) Burk‐holder. This finding extends the known host range of this pathogen, which now includes wheat, hyacinth and possibly clover as well as rhubarb. Its existence on apple and pear was established, thus supporting speculation that it is a widespread and an opportunist pathogen. An amended description of E. rhapontici is given.
