summary Methods for large‐scale collection and rearing of wheat bulb flies are described. About 80 000 eggs were obtained from about 4000 flies collected from infested fields in eastern England. When larvae fed on wheat plants, 55–70 per cent of those that hatched from the eggs became flies. At 15°C the time taken from hatching of the larvae until the emergence of flies was about seven weeks. Thirty‐eight artificial media were tried for rearing larvae, but none was successful.
