SUMMARY A survey of leatherjacket populations (larvae of Tipula paludosa Meig.) in sooth‐west England was made in 1963–74 using 2° in. (6·3 cm) core turf samples and a Bristol washing apparatus to extract the leatherjackets. In a preliminary trial, population estimates using core samples of this size were similar to those using 4 in. (10·2 cm) cores.
