SUMMARY The relation between numbers of Longidorus elongatus (De Man) Thome & Swanger and yield of barley (in 1968 and 1969) and potatoes (in 1972) was studied in a field at Shifnal, Salop in which sugar beet had been affected in 1967. Evidence was obtained that the nematode affected the yield of these crops. Estimated loss of yield was about 1 t/ha/100 Longidorus /200 g for barley in 1968 and about 3 t/ha/100 Longidorus / 200 g for potatoes in 1972. In 1969 there was no correlation between the density of L. elongatus and barley yield but in both 1968 and 1969 there was a negative correlation with grain size.
