SUMMARY Seed tubers of cv. Majestic were inoculated with isolates of Erwinia carotovora from the Canary Isles, Egypt and the United Kingdom in order to determine which of the isolates could induce blackleg in progeny plants. This technique was found to be very reliable for differentiating between the blackleg pathogen, E. carotovora var. atroseptica and the taxonomically similar pathogen, E. carotovora van carotovora. Study of certain strains of E. carotovora from the Canary Isles, Egypt and Northern Ireland emphasized the importance of relating physiological and pathological characteristics in the understanding of intraspecific variation within this group of bacteria.
