SUMMARY Arabis mosaic virus (AMV) was detected in leaves of four Fraxinus excelsior L. trees showing chlorotic mottling, chevrons or oak‐leaf patterns and growing in soil infested with virus‐carrying Xiphinema diversicaudatum Micol. Using an isolate of AMV from ash, inoculated leaves of F. excelsior seedlings developed chlorotic local lesions and a transient chlorotic chevron formed in two leaflets on one of 18 systemically infected plants. Two of 10 F. ornus L. seedlings inoculated and systemically infected with the same ash isolate of AMV developed mild chlorotic mottle symptoms.
