SUMMARY The National Forecasting Scheme for potato blight control had not been successful in the Romney Marsh area of Kent for many years. Hygrothermographs sited over a small but uniform topographical area showed marked variation in the occurrence of Beaumont periods indicating a probable reason for the frequent failure of the National Warning Scheme when applied to this area. A modified blight spray programme for Romney Marsh was devised in which spray timings are based primarily on the growth stage of the crop. A nine‐spray trial showed that blight can be controlled in the Romney Marsh and an economic return produced.
