SUMMARY Nineteen spring wheat cultivars were tested for their reaction to isolates of black stem rust in glasshouse tests over a period of six years at the N.I.A.B. The various criteria assessed were incorporated into a relative infection index (RII) and cultivars grouped according to their relative resistance. Only one cultivar, Caesar, showed resistance to infection; the remainder were moderately susceptible or very susceptible. The test results are in fair agreement with the results from natural infections in field cultivar trials.
