SUMMARY Removing alternate plants or alternate pairs of plants from sugar beet crops during the first week of either June, July or August decreased sugar yields by 5, 16, and 33 per cent or by 10, 19, and 35 per cent respectively. This factor must be taken into account when making estimates of crop yield losses, due to diseases, based on yield losses suffered by single infected plants.
