SUMMARY The effect of pre‐packaging procedures on the subsequent development of soft rots in potato tubers in polyethylene bags and on the bag atmospheres is described. The pre‐packaging of ‘uncured’ tubers but not of ‘cured’ tubers in polyethylene led to a substantial incidence of rotting. Both riddling tubers and washing them in water contaminated with Erwinia carolovora increased the number of tubers developing rots.
