SUMMARY Examination of 104 samples of Northern Ireland seed oats showed that 84 were contaminated with Pyrenophora avenae . The fungus from 25 of these samples was resistant to seed treatment with organomercury while from 34 other samples it was susceptible. Mercury resistance was associated with colony appearance in that isolates forming light‐coloured coremial colonies were resistant and those forming dark‐coloured colonies with few coremia were susceptible; both groups were pathogenic to oat seedlings. A sample of organomercurial dust obtained in 1942 had no more effect on the mercury‐resistant P. avenae than a sample of the same brand obtained in 1965. The most effective control treatment was a thiram soak.
