SUMMARY Oat cultivars reported resistant to frit fly attack in the tiller and panicle stages were investigated. Doefleurs Weihenstephan, Hohenheimer V, von Lochow's Yellow, Hede Havre and Summer proved to be the least susceptible. The resistance possessed by these cultivars was found to be only relative and appeared to be associated with swift initial development and erectness. Since it appeared doubtful that these cultivars would maintain superiority in pure stands, it is considered that their inclusion in a breeding programme is not merited.
