SUMMARY The occurrence of toxicity to DDT in rye and of genetic resistance is recorded. Resistance, due to a recessive factor, is widely distributed at low frequencies in cultivated and wild populations of Secale cereale and in other species of Secale . The significance of these discoveries in underlining the importance of plant breeding for widening the scope of plant protection by means of chemicals is discussed briefly.
