SUMMARY Small doses of D‐D kill many free‐living nematodes in sandy soil and can significantly increase yields of sugar and barley grain. The fumigant can be placed during ploughing and its position indicated by drilling rows of winter wheat at intervals on the ploughed land. The rows of wheat act as markers in the spring and allow spring‐sown crops to be drilled in the fumigated bands of soil.
