Dicarboxylates are generally considered the main energy‐bearing compounds imported from plant cells into bacteroids in root nodules. Evidence reviewed herein supports the hypothesis that other compounds contribute and that proline catabolism may have particular importance in bacteroid metabolism during environmental stress.
