. Recent strategies in the analysis of plastid gene expression at both the RNA and protein level are presented and current knowledge in this rapidly expanding research area is summarized. The role of transcriptional and post‐transcriptional mechanisms in the expression of nuclear and organelle genes for plastid constituents is discussed, with emphasis on the control of these mechanisms by light. Available evidence points to species‐specific, tissue‐specific, and developmental stage‐specific differences in the extent to which photoregulation is involved at each level of plastid gene expression.
