This study examines the capacity in Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa L. to assume a correct direction towards the bank it originally came from when released in water, by using only celestial orienting cues. These cues can be identified as the sun and, probably, polarized skylight. The orienting mechanism is time‐compensated.
