. Desert locusts ( Schistocerca gregaria Forskal.) were flown into an airstream from a wind tunnel while tethered to a balance. Rate of oxygen consumption and lift were recorded. The mean rate of oxygen consumption of male locusts in level flight at airspeeds between 2.5 and 3m/s was found to be 12.6ml/g/h.
