The loss of sperm at copulation in Culicoides melleus was investigated with respect to the previous sexual experience of the female and the interval between her copulations. Approximately 40% of ejaculated sperm were lost if a male copulated with a female within 16 hours of her previous insemination by another male. By 96 hours after the first insemination, sperm transfer at a second copulation was virtually back to the initial 100% level.
