SYNOPSIS The morphology and mode of action of the anal apparatus of membracid nymphs are described. The possible functions of the “whipping” action exhibited by the eversible tube which forms part of the anal apparatus are discussed and reasons why this seems most likely to be primarily a defensive reaction are given. Analogues of the structures are indicated.
