SYNOPSIS Measurements are given of the forces that can be applied to an object held between the prothoracic and cephalic horns of a large male Hercules beetle. The ways in which the horns are adapted for gripping objects are discussed. The intensity and form of the sound produced by the stridulatory organs of the male are described.
