By means of the Alcian blue ‘critical electrolyte concentration’ technique and specific enzymic extraction, stainable material corresponding to chondroitin sulphate has been demonstrated in the cytoplasm of reactive astrocytes around a needle wound in the brain of rats, in astrocytic processes in the white matter of the mouse brain after treatment with cuprizone, and in human fetal astrocytes grown in uitro . Increased amounts of glycosaminoglycans in astrocytes seem to accompany rearrangement of tissue components in the central nervous system, and the histochemical demonstration of chondroitin sulphate in astrocytes may reflect changes in the state of their cell surface.
