Observations have been made on seven guinea pigs with relapsing or chronic progressive experimental allergic neuritis. All showed prominent hypertrophic changes with concentric Schwann cell proliferation. Abnormalities of myelination were observed in remyelinating fibres. These included the internodal termination of myelin lamellae, and the overriding of the myelin lamellae either at nodes of Ranvier or, at times, in the internodal region. The manner of origin of these appearances is discussed, as is their significance in relation to theories of myelinogenesis and their possible relevance to nerve conduction.
