A study was made of inosine‐5‐diphosphatase activity of glial cells after intracerebral inoculation with various viral and non‐viral infectious agents. A generalized and non‐specific increase of the enzymatic activity was observed in cortical glial cells beyond the limits of the morphological lesions normally visible with the light microscope. A similar generalized enzymatic reaction of glial cells was also seen after intracerebral injection with non‐infectious tissue damaging agents such as incomplete Freund's adjuvant and calf serum. The possible role of oedema in the genesis of the changes is discussed.
