There is considerable evidence in support of the concept that propagation of electrical activity in gastrointestinal smooth muscle occurs by way of local circuit current flow through intercellular low‐resistance pathways. In what follows, a general description of propagation by local circuit current flow is presented, after which some of this evidence, in the form of five sets of experimental data, is reviewed.
