Summary Two papers in this issue of Molecular Microbiology from Carol Gross and colleagues describe experiments that investigate how two alternative Escherichia coli σ proteins recognize target promoter −10 regions. A combination of genetics, biochemistry and bioinformatics is used to show that determinants in two adjacent domains of the σ proteins contact discrete sequence elements in the −10 regions.
