Summary A core curriculum with options or special study modules represents a valuable strategy in tackling many of the problems facing medical education today. In particular, it is a meaningful response to the challenge of information overload while at the same time allowing students an opportunity to study areas in more depth according to their own interests. A sequential model in which students have to demonstrate mastery of the core before proceeding to special study options is recommended.
