Summary Multiprofessional education, to be effective and meaningful, must aim at facilitating the development of the necessary competencies in a group of students or health care providers belonging to a wide range of health‐related vocations, through sharing of a common core of learning experiences during certain periods of their instruction and training including basic, post basic and continuing education, thus enabling them to interact together as a team and seek cost‐effective solutions to the health problems of the individual, families and the community. Community‐based learning, using a task‐related, problem‐solving approach with emphasis on acquiring competence and demonstrating performance, constitutes the essence of learning strategy. The essential outcome(s) must relate to congruence of objectives and convergence of services, thus optimizing the functional output of the health care delivery team, in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness. The valid criteria for assessment must not only relate to acquisition of individual competencies, but must also take into cognizance the ability to perform assigned team‐tasks. The ultimate objective is to contribute collectively towards enhancement of quality of life through health‐related intervention and intersectoral interaction, effectively utilizing all available human resources for health.
