Summary It has been said that the only constant in professional life today is that of change. We do well to embrace a culture of change so that, as health professionals, we can help to shape it rather than stand aloof and leave it to others to shape us. In these challenging times professional associations need to examine themselves closely both through the microscope — to study individual fields of activity in some depth — and through the telescope—to learn how each part relates to the whole.
