Summary About 80% of MBs who proceed to MD or ChM do so within 15 years of obtaining their primary medical qualification. Using this measurement as a yardstick, an attempt is made to draw a valid reflection of the award of these postgraduate degrees in the twenty university medical schools during the period 1953‐70. London produced half as many MDs and ChMs as expected, Oxbridge considerably more and Scotland about half the expected ChMs.
