Summary An analysis of self‐descriptive essays by applicants who successfully gained entry to medical school shows that five sub‐types of entrant can be differentiated. Medical schools have not yet deliberated on the sort, or sorts, of person most needed in the medical profession, but doubtless individual selectors exercise personal if undeclared preferences. More elaborate inspection of the differences among entrants discloses six main groups who got into medical school.
